Cumbria Health Call launch Future GP Programme

Cumbria Health on Call (CHoC) is delighted to announce that due to demand, they have launched a new Future GP Programme aimed at year 12 and 13 students which will run at their state of the art training centre based at Hilltop Heights, Carlisle, Cumbria.

CHoC Solutions, Cumbria Health on Calls’ specialist training division will oversee the running of the programme and will utilise the skills and knowledge of GP’s, clinical and non-clinical training staff to give students a complete overview of life as a GP and the academic route into the profession.

This is a 2 day programme, the first of which will cover: How to apply to medical school, the medical school interview, life as a medical student and junior doctor followed by interactive workshops covering the doctor’s bag, the emergency situation, and visiting a patient in the community. The second day of the programme will involve students gaining real life work experience as they will complete a shift with a CHoC clinician.

Hannah Mason, Executive Director of Operations said “we receive a great deal of applications throughout the year from students looking for work placements or help with medical school applications, so we felt a formal programme to support schools in Cumbria would be the best way forward” Hannah went on to say “As a social enterprise we are committed to investing in our local community, Helping year 12 and 13 students to understand what life is like as a GP will hopefully mean they will choose to come back to Cumbria as qualified GP’s in the future”

Applications to join the programme should be made via school or college and come with a recommendation from either the head of sixth form or head teacher to support the application.
